C’est peu avant cette ligne d’arrivée, à la sortie du virage que l’on appelle le raccordement (avec le circuit Bugatti), qu’eut lieu le terrible accident de 1955 . La Mercedes de Pierre Levegh percuta l’Austin Healey de Lance Macklin avant de monter sur le talus et d’exploser. Le moteur s’envola dans la foule rassemblée devant les stands en bord de piste. Toute l’équipe Mercedes, y compris Stirling Moss et Juan Manuel Fangio, décida de se retirer. 81 spectateurs trouvèrent la mort ainsi que le pilote Pierre Levegh.

Although the circuit had several lengths beause of some modifications, the “modern” finishing line always was in this place. On aperçoit sur le cliché ci dessus le centre névralgique du circuit c’est à dire la batiment de la direction de course. A droite, la partie “fermée” du circuit puisque dans cette partie, ce n’est pas une route ouverte qui est utilisée. A gauche, les grandes tribunes et les stands.
